Foundation Golf Tournament Raises $90K for Students
On August 13, 2012, more than 200 golfers
participated in the 19th Annual Worcester State Foundation Golf
Tournament which was once again held on two courses, Wachusett Country
Club and Kettle Brook Golf Club. Due to their support and the support
of our valued sponsors, the tournament raised more than $90,000 for the
Foundation’s endowment.
In addition to student scholarships, Foundation
dollars support student research. Grants from the Student Research Fund
have proven to be a valuable resource to students such as Kevin Karanja
’12, who spoke at the dinner and awards ceremony. While a chemistry
student at Worcester State, Karanja worked as a research assistant at
WSU and Holy Cross, and presented his protein and hydrogen research at
two Massachusetts conferences and at one in San Diego, Calif. Karanja
received a Foundation grant last year to participate in the American
Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Annual Meeting. Karanja
told the crowd proudly, "I graduated with zero debt, thanks to all of
you.”
The combination of his research and acceptance as a conference presenter
enriched his Worcester State education beyond measure, Karanja noted.
“As a result, I hope to mentor undergraduate students to participate in
opportunities that broaden their skill set beyond the classroom,” he
said.
“Your support is so important to our students,” President Barry Maloney
told golfers. “It is essential to helping them realize their dreams.”
Foundation President Gregg Rosen ’86 added, “We are on a solid path of
success. Our foundation was established 15 years ago with only 15
scholarships. Today we have a $15 million endowment. With your support,
we will continue to fund student scholarships and their research and
creative accomplishments.”
