Shaughnessy Building Dedication Set for May 15
Saturday, May 15 will be a very special day in the history of WSC. That afternoon, from 3 to 5 p.m., the Administration Building will be formally dedicated in memory of the late Helen G. Shaughnessy ’43.
The highlight of the program will be a tea, a fitting tribute to an alumna not only synonymous with the College, but also its elegant Scholarship Tea.
It is said that for more than 40 years, Mrs. Shaughnessy had a love affair with WSC and with all who passed through its storied doors. She had a significant impact on countless lives, as mentor, teacher, classmate, relative, colleague, and treasured friend. She had a joy for living that was contagious, and gave tirelessly of her time, expertise, and talents.
Mrs. Shaughnessy was an active member of the Worcester State College community.
President of her senior class, she subsequently enjoyed a notable career as an elementary school teacher, elementary supervisor, and WSC associate professor, administrator, Foundation Board member, and volunteer.
Mrs. Shaughnessy received an honorary doctorate degree in 1986, a Distinguished Alumni Award for Outstanding Service to Alma Mater in 1990, and was the 2003 Scholarship Tea honoree. She established an endowed scholarship for Education majors in 1999.
A consummate hostess, every year Mrs. Shaughnessy organized a reunion with classmates, who have credited her with assuring their long-lasting friendships.
